Rewatching Evangelion (now on Netflix!), I’m struck by the sophistication of the character design—especially of Misato, director of operations at Nerv. Her lateral thinking, which causes her to come off as a bit of an oddball in everyday life, translates into an ability to instantaneously perceive feasible plans in over-constrained combat scenarios. We get more than a Disney Channel genius strategist that’s just a dork who overplans. It makes you wish that parenting and romance had such straightforward goals as battle so that she could see some success in those realms as well, but instead, we get to reflect on how counterproductive goals and plans are in those situations and empathize with her apparent decision to just not play.
